Research Existing Fitness Devices

Create your own piece of wearable technology using a micro:bit.

Step 1

Before you create your own piece of wearable technology, it’s important to see what other devices are already out there. Understanding what people already use and what existing products work well is a great way to start.

With a partner or in a small group, create a list of devices and apps that can be used to monitor your fitness or activity. Search the web for examples. It could be a phone app, something you wear or something that combines both.

Step 2

Make a list of the top three best fitness devices or apps you can find.

Using a search engine, investigate the type of activity that is measured using your chosen devices.

Can they count steps?

Can they measure your heart rate?

Can they count calories burned?

Step 3

Wearable devices use built-in sensors to record information about the person wearing them.

Using a search engine, investigate what types of sensors your chosen devices use to record activity. Some devices use light sensors to record blood flow. Other devices might use an accelerometer to record steps or movement.
