Finishing an Embroidery Patch

Clean up the finished design. Seal the edges of the patch ready for cutting out and stitching on to a final product/item of clothing.

Step 1

Once the embroidery machine has finished creating your design, it is time to prepare your patch for stitching onto a product of your choice.

Remove the embroidery hoop from the embroidery carriage. (Hint: if you can’t remember how to do this, look at Unit 6 - lesson 2.)

Release the tensioning screw to free up the fabric from the hoop.

Trim any loose threads and tear off the tear-away backing from the design.

Step 2

To stop your embroidery design fraying at the edges or falling apart, it is important to use glue to protect the edges.

Run a small amount of Fray Stop glue along the all the edges of your embroidery design (front and back) and rub it into the stitches using your finger or a brush.

Leave to dry.

Step 3

Once the glue is dry, cut out your embroidery patch making sure to cut right up to the stitches.

Your design will be untidy if you don’t right cut up to the stitches, but be very careful not to cut the stitches themselves!

Your design is now ready to stitch onto a product or item of clothing of your choice.
